WSBK - Silverstone Preview

Obviously Max Biaggi is having a Lorenzo-esque season, with 9 wins and mulitple double win weekends. He will definitely be a rider to watch, as the Aprilia has been working well now that the kinks have been worked out. This is a high speed track that the Aprilia should be well suited for. He has a 68 point advantage, with only 4 rounds left, so theoretically he could just put it on cruise control and as long as he stays near the top 5, his competitors would need to have an equally perfect final few rounds to compete.

Silverstone might not be as easy of a task as one might assume though. The WSBK series is filled with Brits that would love to win at home. There are currently at least 7 riders in the WSBK paddock that call UK home.

Jonathan Rea has taken three race wins so far this year, mainly at Assen where he took 2 of those 3 wins. Rea also took 2nd place at the Brno round, following his first win of the season. His most recent endeavours, is taking third place in the famed Suzuka 8 hours event.

Leon Haslam will definitely be a threat to Biaggi as well. He's got a lot of experience at (the old) silverstone, and with the extra encouragement by the home crowd, he will definitely be a rider to watch. As the second place man in the championship, he's going to have to work hard to catch Biaggi.

Carlos Checa has been going strong on his privateer Ducati. As the season wraps up, and deals are made, he's going to want to ride well to try to secure a spot on the factory team. Although slowing recently, taking a 6-9 at Brno, he still is a very capable contender.

Noriyuki Haga has only taken one win this season, and has otherwise been a lot less of a factor in the championship than he has in previous years. He really needs to get going on his factory Ducati. It seems that with the series losing Spies and Bayliss, he really hasnt been riding the same. We'll be crossing our fingers for him this weekend, for sure.

James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow are both Brits that would be excited about a win at their home circuit. The crowds will be huge, as this is the UK's only World Superbike event on the calendar. Toseland stated that he has nothing to lose at this point, and will just be shooting for the win. Crutchlow went on to say essentially the same thing, attributing his poor Brno performance to problems with the spec Pirelli tire.

Troy Corser will be returning to racing at Silverstone, following an injury at Brno. He feels that the BMW will be well suited to the high speed track, and expects to do well.
